Brighton Fringe 2023: Who To See (16th – 21st May)

Ahoy! It’s the second of my weekly guides to what comedy shows to see at the Brighton Fringe. Please keep your arms and legs inside the listings at all times.

CAPTAIN BREADBEARD’S BREADY BRILLIANT ALTERNATIVE COMEDY SHOW
20th May, 10pm, Caravanserai Brighton

I have no idea who Captain Breadbeard is, or what he wants. But this is a great, alternative lineup (Sam Nicoresti! Lachlan Werner! Stephen Catling!), so I am sure you will be in safe, if yeasty, hands.

SU MI: BANANA BEARD
20-21st May, Actors Theatre, 9:30pm

East Londoner Su Mi is a rampant high-energy performer with great songs, important material, and unexpected entrances. Also: if she asks you to throw her a cane, do it more professionally than I managed.

JENNY WYNTER BY REQUEST
18-19th May, Caravanserai, 8:30pm

A bit of stand-up, a bit of cabaret, and some wonderful improv songs with Australia’s finest wielder of the key-tar.

IMDP: IMPROVISED MOVIE DIRECTOR PODCAST
20-21st May, 1pm, The Temple Bar

Hosted by a fabulous and snobby movie enthusiastic and know-all, this improv show [1] will feature an entirely new movie discussed in rich detail, with key scenes acted out for you. The twist: the director finds out the name of the movie at the same time as the audience does.

JULIA MASLI: HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
19-20th May, Brighton Spiegeltent, 7:45pm

Whether leg, log, or tree, Julia Masli is one of the funniest modern clowns around. Expect Chaplin-esque mastery of movement, utter silliness, and some thought-provoking comments about one’s sense of place and identity.

LESLIE BLOOM SOLVES A MURDER
Sunday 21st May, Presuming Ed’s, 7:45pm

Leslie Bloom, arguably the comic creation of Mr Simon Topping, is a wonderful comic creation, all dreary specificity and occasional flights of fancy.

She needs your help solving a very local murder, and no number of dog tarot cards are going to help her this time. Inspired improv and character nonsense with one of Brighton’s finest.

MISFIT / PERFORMANCE REVIEW
17-19th May, The Caxton Arms, 7pm

Two of Brighton’s best comics share their debut half hour. Expect over-sharing, funny truth, and at least two epiphanies. I interviewed both these humans for my newsletter last week – have a read!

[1] I have been the guest director of this a couple of times, for full disclosure. It sure won’t be me this time!
