The Ballad of Ms Doris Wu

I’ve written another demo. This one has actual lyrics and everything, which I shall post below to help me remember what they are. As always, I only really have one means of writing lyrics: utter stream of consciousness. Let it all hang out, I say.

It’s been a while since I published an album of songs, but I’m hopeful I’ll get another set out this year – perhaps via the new folk duo I’m in, The High Churches. We probably need to manage more than one practice for that to happen, admittedly!

————————

Ungathered board games gather dust
I’m only telling you this because
I’m waiting for you here to take your turn
As without it my heart it starts to yearn
There is a point just off the coast
The place I guess I loved you most

Untethered dreams and mutual schemes
Keep swimming out cos as it seems
We haul ourselves like seals upon the shore
With you right there I’ve never needed more

Is it a duel or a duet
My ex-girlfriend is now a vet
She’s killing pets for fun in Hawaii
It pays well and her surgery’s by the sea
The ballad of Ms Doris Wu
She never said I loved you too

I swim and swim against the tide
And like the dude I just abide
Those old regrets have calcified
Like Dr Jekyl and Marina Hyde

But I can hear the birds among the moor
And I’m not scared of shadows any more
The seasons come and I try to take them in
Next year I’ll be your eagle on the wing
