The Highchurches (or: The Threechurches) record a live session at BBC Maida Vale

Thanks so much to my very talented friends for making this happen. Maida Vale shuts its doors for good (as a BBC institution, at least) in a few months, so it felt faintly miraculous to get the five of us (three members of the band, my friend the sound engineer, and my friend the photographer) in the same room at the same time.

We missed you Elle, and it wasn’t the same without you. The recordings sound gorgeous but we’re not complete without your bass lines. Here’s to loads more recording, gigs, and fun as a foresome in the months and years to come.

We did three songs: The Ballad Of Miss Doris Wu, Avalon, and Even Keel. Out of the three, Even Keel came easiest: only three takes. Choosing the best take of each tune wasn’t too hard in the end. It was brilliant and surreal to record in studio 4, home of the Peel sessions and many other fabulous shows and recordings.

The songs will be available in due course. Please book The Highchurches for your gig, festival, or millenium barn dance / public rave.
